FRIENDSRAISER WITH PLNT BURGER: "CONES FOR KOINER"

Monday, November 24 & Tuesday, November 25 from 6:00-8:00pm at

PLNT Burger (located inside the Silver Spring Whole Foods)

Say "Cones for Koiner" at check out to get a free small cone with your burger.  Plus, 20% of proceeds from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th will be donated to CKC Farming.  This is a great opportunity to grab an easy weeknight dinner, support your local nonprofit, and check a few items off your Thanksgiving shopping list.  PLNT Burger is a local vegan restaurant located inside the Silver Spring Whole Foods.  Click here for more details.

 

LUNCH AND FARM TOUR FOR VETERANS WITH ARCADIA

Arcadia’s Veteran Farmer Program is a multilayered, hands-on educational program that develops new farmers; capitalizes on the growing market in local, sustainably grown foods; and encourages entrepreneurship and job creation.  The Veteran Farmers will be joining us at Koiner Farm for lunch, farm tour and discussion on making land more affordable for urban farming.

 

AUTUMN VOLUNTEER DAY

Every Spring and Fall CKC hosts a volunteer day for the community to come and work in the garden beds at Koiner Farm.  This fall we will be clearing out some of our beds and laying cover crop, which will return nutrients to the soil.  Please RSVP to Kate at kate@ckcfarming.org if you plan to attend so that we can plan accordingly.  Thanks!

COMMUNITY FOOD RESCUE WEEK KICKS OFF AT KOINER FARM

Since farms provide significant opportunities to reduce food waste, Koiner Farm is a great place to kick off Montgomery County's Community Food Rescue Week!  There will be a raffle, some light refreshments, a compost demonstration and a farm tour.  All are welcome!

COMPOST TRAINING WITH MASTER COMPOSTERS

This year, the UMD-Extension Master Gardeners are partnering with CKC Farming to host their annual Fall Expo at the Silver Spring Library.  Stop by the Silver Spring Library for info on composting and then come on over to Koiner Farm (just 1 block from the library), where you will get to participate in hands-on compost activities - add browns and green, measure temps, turn hot piles, sift cooled compost, ask questions and more. 

FUTURE FEST WITH KID MUSEUM

CKC Farming will be exhibiting for the 3rd year in a row at KID Museum's annual fall festival, recently re-branded as, FutureFest!  Visitors to CKC's exhibit will get to help Koiner Farm establish its new pollinator garden by creating resting rocks for pollinators.  Our exhibit will be located at the corner of Fenton and Ellsworth, to the left of the KID Museum information booth.  Hope to see everyone this Sunday!

FAMILY FRIDAY ON THE FARM

Join us for our Second Annual Family Friday at Koiner Farm.  We'll have live music, activities for the kids, and farm fresh produce for sale. Bring your picnic blanket and basket to enjoy a summer evening on the farm.

 

YARD SALE

Friday, June 21-22, 2019 from 7:00am-1:00pm at Koiner Farm

The CKC interns and volunteers have been hard at work this spring cleaning out Charlie's old garage; and they've found more than a few treasures along the way.  Stop by and check out century old farm tools, handmade farm boxes, antique cooking equipment, WWII chests and helmets, and so much more.  All proceeds benefit  CKC Farming.

 

EARTH DAY COMPOST BIN CONSTRUCTION

Monday, April 22, 2019 from 9:30am-11:30am at Koiner Farm

Calling all builders! Join us this Earth Day as we finalize the construction of our state-of-the-art, volunteer-built, 3-bin, hot compost system.  This 3-bin composter has been made possible with a grant from the Sierra Club.  The design and operation of the composter has been provided by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), UMD-Extension Master Gardeners, and the Montgomery County Food Council.  Volunteers are welcome to come help us put the finishing touches on the composter this Earth Day.  Please RSVP to kate@ckcfarming.org.

FARMER IN THE CLASSROOM

Thanks to the Crossroads Community Food Network for inviting the farmers at Koiner Farm to participate in "Farmer in the Classroom" with the 5th graders at Piney Branch Elementary.   We had a blast talking about bees and could not be more impressed by how much these students know about bees.  Can't wait for the Piney Branch students to come visit us at Koiner Farm this growing season!

KID FEST 2018 WITH KID MUSEUM

KIDfest is the DC region's premier Maker event for children and their families.  Aimed at reaching children ages 6-12, KIDfest is a joy for all ages.  KIDfest attracts upwards of 15,000 people each year and encourages the exploration of STEM, the arts and other creative pursuits.  CKC will be hosting an exhibit at this year's KIDfest in which visitors will be invited to make water colors from flower petals and paint a mural that will be displayed in the Silver Spring Library.

RISE FOR CLIMATE RALLY WITH 350.ORG

Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 from 2:00pm-4:00pm in Rockville Town Square

The Rise for Climate rally in Rockville, MD is just one of hundreds of rallies being held across the across the world in support of and preparation for San Francisco's Global Climate Action Summit on September 12-14.  Over the course of this weekend 900+ rallies will take place from DC to the Philippines.  The 350.org Montgomery County chapter is spearheading Montgomery County's participation and response to the Global Climate Summit, so look for more events to come as the Summit approaches.

Manna's Mobile Kitchen and Pop-Up Pantry (a 40'-bus, retrofitted with state of the art cooking stations) will be coming to Koiner Farm this summer to host cooking classes for East Silver Spring neighborhood residents.  CKC Farming will have fun activities for the kids and Koiner Farm produce will be on sale at our new farm stand.  We hope you'll join us for this fun summer evening on the farm.

S.P.A.R.K.L.E.R.S. 2018 ANNUAL PICNIC

The S.P.A.R.K.L.E.R.S. are coming back to Koiner Farm this summer for their annual potluck picnic and talk.  This year's topic: "Preserving Koiner Farm for the Next Generation." Talk will be given by Kate Medina, Co-Founder and Director of CKC Farming.  Come hungry - there is always more than enough food for all!

Montgomery Parks is launching a new summer speaker series, Food Matters: Foodie Fridays. The series features regional experts that focus on topics such as land preservation, urban farming, community food projects, food access and stories from our area's farmers, educators, chefs, community organizers, and food lovers.  The first session will feature Kate Medina and Hannah Sholder, founders of The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming. Their session is titled Preserving the Legacy of an Iconic Montgomery County Farmer and will discuss the ongoing work taking place at Koiner Farm in downtown Silver Spring

MAY FAIR AT PINE CREST ELEMENTARY

The Pine Crest Elementary School's May Fair is a great opportunity for the school community to come together, reconnect with the outdoors and celebrate another successful school year.  This year, CKC Farming will be hosting an interactive activity on local pollinators and sending each kid home with a pollinator friendly seedling to plant in their yard.

EARTH DAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

What better way to celebrate the Earth, than by getting your hands dirty at your local neighborhood farm.  Residents of the East Silver Spring neighborhood are invited to Koiner Farm to help plant lettuce, herbs and flowers, clean out over grown areas, transplant raspberry bushes, spread mulch, construct and repair tomato cages, and other odd jobs.  Please RSVP to kate@ckcfarming.org if you are interested in attending.

HEALTH & WELLNESS NIGHT FOR EAST SILVER SPRING RESIDENTS

CKC Farming will be participating in the East Silver Spring Elementary School's annual Health & Wellness Night.  The ESSE Health & Wellness Night is one of the school's most celebrated events of the year, in which families come together for a group exercise followed by a healthy meal and valuable tips on nutrition and healthy living.  This year, CKC Farming will be hosting a herb planting activity and sending everyone home with recipes for their herbs.

KID Fest is the DC region's premier maker event for families.  KID Fest is put on by KID Museum, a Montgomery County nonprofit focused on making the world a better place by fostering the inventive and creative spirit of children, age 6-12.  CKC Farming is thrilled to participate in this year's KID Fest, as both an exhibitor of the fair and featured speaker of the KID Talk series.

Lynn Koiner shares her secrets to creating beautiful baskets of fruits and vegetables for entry in the County Ag Fair  at this year's SPARKLERS' picnic.  The fruits and vegetables grown by Charlie Koiner have won dozens of Blue Ribbons at the Montgomery County Ag Fair.
