The Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming (CKC) is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting and managing urban farms that serve the needs of their community.

The Charles Koiner Conservancy (CKC) emerged out of a need to preserve one particularly iconic urban farm - Koiner Farm - located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.  Koiner Farm was operated by Mr. Charles Koiner for 40 years, until his passing in January 2019 at the age of 98.

In 2010, Mr. Koiner's way of life was documented in the film, Corner Plot.  In 2018, Mr. Koiner he was named "The First Urban Farmer," by Montgomery Magazine. And today, Mr. Koiner's legacy lives on through the work of CKC.

CKC co-holds a conservation easement that permanently protects Koiner Farm.  CKC also manage the farm's day-to-day operations with help from a team of neighborhood volunteers and interns.  Ultimately, CKC is working to establish a network of neighborhood farms that collectively support a more sustainable and resilient food system.

Land Stewardship

In 2019, CKC's Land Stewardship program established a conservation easement to preserve Koiner Farm in perpetuity. CKC's Land Stewardship team is now working on a strategic conservation plan that will determine how and where more neighborhood farms should be created and protected here in Montgomery County, MD.

Farm Management

CKC's Farm Management team runs the day-to-day operations at Koiner Farm.  Volunteers and interns work in partnership with skilled and experienced urban farmers to care for fresh, healthy, hyper-local produce.  Koiner Farm is a model for how other neighborhood farms can operate on a local level.

Farm Education

CKC Farming was founded upon the belief that, if we are to achieve a truly sustainable food system, everyone, especially children, need to connect with their food and their land on a deeper level.  Our Farm Educators make this possible by hosting on-farm field trips, workshops, picnics and more, while also participating in events with schools and partners.
