The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming (CKC Farming) is a nonprofit land trust, created in 2019, for the purposes of protecting and managing urban farms that inspire the next generation of sustainable food innovators.

CKC Farming emerged out of a need to preserve one particularly historic and iconic urban farm in downtown Silver Spring: Koiner Farm.  Koiner Farm was operated by Mr. Charles Koiner for nearly 40 years, until his passing at the age of 98.  In 2018, Mr. Koiner was named Montgomery County's First Urban Farmer.  Charlie's legacy lives on through our work.

Now that CKC Farming has permanently protected Koiner Farm under a conservation easement, we are working towards our vision of creating a network of protected urban farms.

We believe that urban farms should be like neighborhood parks... one in every neighborhood where people can come together to connect with their food, their land and their neighbors.

Land Stewardship

Currently, our Land Stewardship program stewards Koiner Farm.

In 2020, the CKC Farming will embark on the development of a strategic urban farming conservation plan that will dictate how and where we expand in order to create a network of protected urban farms.

Our Farm Management program runs the day-to-day operations at Koiner Farm.

Volunteers and interns work in partnership with skilled and experienced urban farmers to plan, plant, maintain, harvest

and sell fresh, healthy,

hyper-local produce.

CKC Farming was founded on the premise that children should understand and experience food on a deeper level.

Our Education program hosts on-farm field trips, workshops, picnics and more, while also participating in community events with local school and partners.
