The Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming (CKC Farming) is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting and managing urban farms.

CKC Farming emerged out of a need to preserve one particularly iconic urban farm - Koiner Farm - located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.  Koiner Farm was operated by Mr. Charles Koiner for nearly 40 years, until his passing in January 2019, at the age of 98.

In 2010, Mr. Koiner's way of life was documented in the film, Corner Plot.  In 2018, Mr. Koiner he was named "The First Urban Farmer," by Montgomery Magazine. And today, Mr. Koiner's legacy lives on through the work of CKC Farming.

CKC co-holds a conservation easement that permanently protects Koiner Farm.  CKC also manage the farm's day-to-day operations with help from a team of neighborhood volunteers and interns.  Ultimately, CKC is working to establish a network of neighborhood farms that collectively support a more sustainable and resilient food system.

Land Stewardship

In 2019, CKC's Land Stewardship program established a conservation easement to preserve Koiner Farm in perpetuity. CKC's Land Stewardship team is now working on a strategic conservation plan that will determine how and where more neighborhood farms should be created and protected here in Montgomery County, MD.

Farm Management

CKC's Farm Management team runs the day-to-day operations at Koiner Farm.  Volunteers and interns work in partnership with skilled and experienced urban farmers to plan, plant, maintain, harvest and sell fresh, healthy, hyper-local produce.  Koiner Farm is a model for how other neighborhood farms can operate on a local level.

Ag Education

CKC Farming was founded upon the belief that, if we are to achieve a truly sustainable food system, everyone, especially children, need to connect with food and farms on a deeper level.

Our Farm Educators make this possible by hosting on-farm field trips, workshops, picnics and more, while also participating in events with schools and partners.

The buzz ...

We are thankful for our partners and sponsors:

We are honored to serve our community:

Number of students served:

We host on-farm field trips for students in K-8th, as well as internships for high school and college students.  Students who visit Koiner Farm experience a small closed-loop food system right in their neighborhood.

Pounds of produce donated:

We donate our clean, fresh, sustainably grown produce to Shepherd's Table (0.5 miles away) and the Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (0.2 miles away).

Square feet of land protected:

We are the primary stewards of the conservation easement that protects Koiner Farm in downtown Silver Spring.  This easement is co-held by CKC and the Maryland Environmental Trust (MET).

Now, more than ever, the world needs healthy, informed, caring individuals armed with the knowledge and experience to create a sustainable and equitable food system.

Thank you!

“We have lived our lives by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. We have been wrong. We must change our lives so that it will be possible to live by the contrary assumption, that what is good for the world will be good for us. And that requires that we make the effort to know the world and learn what is good for it.”

- Wendell Berry, The Long-Legged House
