The Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming (CKC Farming) is a nonprofit land trust, created in 2019, for the purposes of protecting and managing urban farms.

Koiner Farm Re-Opening:

  • A small team of Summer Interns and Volunteers have started working back on the farm.

  • Buyers Club members may now come to the farm on Fridays, 4pm-7pm, to pick up orders.

  • CSA members will continue to receive home deliveries.

  • Visitors are now welcome back on the farm, but must wear a mask, maintain  distance, and avoid contact with farm materials.

CKC Farming emerged out of a need to preserve one particularly historic and iconic urban farm in downtown Silver Spring:  Koiner Farm

Koiner Farm was operated by Mr. Charles Koiner for nearly 40 years, until his passing at the age of 98.  In 2018, Mr. Koiner was named Montgomery County's First Urban Farmer.  Charlie's legacy lives on through the work of CKC Farming.

Now that CKC Farming has permanently preserved Koiner Farm under a conservation easement, we are working towards our vision of creating a network of protected urban farms.

We believe that urban farms are like neighborhood parks... there should be one in every neighborhood where people can come together to connect with their food, their land and their neighbors.

Land Stewardship

Currently, our Land Stewardship program stewards Koiner Farm.

In 2020, CKC Farming will embark on the development of a strategic urban farming conservation plan.  This plan will determine how and where urban farms should be created and protected.

Our Farm Management program runs the day-to-day operations at Koiner Farm.

Volunteers and interns work in partnership with skilled and experienced urban farmers to plan, plant, maintain, harvest

and sell fresh, healthy,

hyper-local produce.

CKC Farming was founded on the premise that children should understand and experience food on a deeper level.

Our Education program hosts on-farm field trips, workshops, picnics and more, while also participating in community events with local  schools and partners.

Farm Management

Now, more than ever, the world needs informed, healthy, caring individuals armed with the knowledge and experience to create a sustainable and equitable food system.  Protecting the urban farms of today will determine the future of our food.

Thank you!
